I am always delighted to be asked to attend events in the constituency that help raise awareness of the fantastic work done by local volunteers. So I was thrilled to be asked to re-open the Oxfam store in Windsor recently, after it had closed for refurbishment.
It was reassuring to meet the volunteers, who give their time and energy to help others less fortunate than themselves. Volunteers play a vital role in local communities and the people I met at the opening were no exception. They were well educated, multi-lingual and engaging and their hard work and dedication is overwhelming. I very much hope that others will get involved in supporting the shop and donating goods.
It was good to learn that, alongside the international work, Oxfam funds are used to help here in the UK as well. Times are tough right now and their work really counts.
With the AV election and local elections upon us, it all too easy to forget another troupe of volunteers. Irrespective of the political party, the thousands of people who knock on doors, deliver leaflets, stuff envelopes and telephone canvas at elections are a key part of our democracy – they are unpaid volunteers. Their work and activity underpins our great British democracy, in the same way that the work of charitable and community volunteers underpin an inclusive and caring society.
I believe that volunteering is at the heart of a civilised society and long may it continue.
