Mr Cameron - Take Your Time

"Last week David Cameron was elected the leader of the Conservative Party.

But I must admit to some misgivings when Michael Howard initially announced the lengthy leadership contest culminating in a “beauty contest” at the Blackpool conference. What can I say? I am happy that my concerns proved unfounded.

The five leadership candidates had excellent qualities to commend them and each of them ticked many of the boxes. At conference, it was clear that David Cameron had edged ahead of his rivals and I was pleased to offer him my support in the MPs’ ballots.

Since election, David has done extremely well. Instead of coming up with policies and initiatives on the hoof to make the headlines, he has sensibly decided to step back and take a good look at the problems we face in Britain today.

I have no doubt that this will result in policies which work – and which are much needed, because under this Government we have suffered a flurry of failed initiatives.

My concern is for the less well-off, the elderly and most vulnerable in society and I am confident that the Conservatives are heading in the right direction with David Cameron.

My message to David Cameron is a simple one – take the time you need to refine the policies that work."
