A Nervous Week
20-May-05, Windsor Express
Article.
"In the early hours of Friday 6th May, a
significant result was delivered in the Windsor
Constituency.
It is difficult to describe the range of
personal emotion.
Election day was spent like a cat on a hot
tin roof. Starting in Poyle and Colnbrook in the east I
passed through Horton, Wraysbury and Datchet, paused in
Windsor, then cantered on to Bray, Forest Park and finished
in Ascot, Sunninghill and Sunningdale. I visited around 50
polling stations to thank the staff and helpers for their
hard work.
I felt nervous, restless and overly
energetic.
Overcome with insecurity as votes were
counted, I felt helpless. Nothing more could be done after
19 months of hard work speaking with residents on 35,000
doorsteps.
As the result was declared, the magnitude
was clear. An increased majority of 10,292!
I was at first elated, excited and
delighted, yet strangely disconnected from what was going on
around me.
On Monday the reality set in. Entering
Parliament for the first time an overwhelming sense of duty
to the people of Windsor swept over me.
My heart and home is in Windsor. My work is
to robustly represent our interests in Westminster during
the week.
I am committed to take action on the issues
that matter to all of us and this drives my determination to
learn the ropes as quickly as possible.
It is with humility that I thank you for
this great honour."
