British Pride
08-Jun-04, Windsor Observer.
"There have been many reasons to
reflect on our Britishness over the last week.
First, Euro 2004 football is upon us. I’ll be
wholeheartedly cheering England! However, in the past I have
found myself cheering for Scotland, Wales and, even, Germany
and Denmark, if England were not playing. Clearly my first
loyalty is to Britain, but it is natural to support others
under different circumstances.
Second, the D-Day remembrance ceremonies. For me they
were a striking reminder of the enormous courage and
patriotism of a previous generation; Brits unafraid of
defending their nation with their lives. Nobody hated German
people, we were opposed to their leaders aim of controlling
Britain.
And third, the European elections. These triggered a
strong sense of our identity distinct from a European
Superstate. Conversely the elections challenged us to
disconnect our feelings of warmth for european people we
know personally, from the idea of giving up control of
Britain to remote European politicians.
All in all, an interesting mix of emotions.
It seems to me it is good to like, support and encourage
people, whilst maintaining a sensible and natural degree of
patriotism and British pride." |

I
believe...
People are happier when making their own decisions.
Business is the engine of the economy that generates our
jobs, incomes and taxes.
Government should not interfere in our lives beyond
protecting and defending us.
