"What a wonderful result in the European elections!

One in six of us voted for UKIP. Many people have had enough of the Labour and LibDem drive sign away control of our lives to remote EU politicians under a new constitution.

Detailed polling shows that most people do not truly want to withdraw from the EU. It is more a case of saying ‘no’ to handing over more to the EU, and ‘yes’ to putting British people first when making decisions.

I was delighted with the clarity of the Conservative slogan ‘Putting Britain First’. However, it seems it may not have been strong enough to match the strength of feeling against the EU.

As a regional Chairman of the ‘no to the euro’ campaign, it was striking that people of all political persuasions were in support: Labour, LibDems, Greens and Trade Unionists. People felt that giving up control of our currency was beyond party politics.

With all parties losing support to UKIP, it is equally striking that giving up more power to the EU is viewed as beyond party politics.

The Conservatives won the election. But the 16% vote for UKIP – well ahead of the LibDems - is a loud shout from the people of Britain for Labour and LibDem politicians to shut up and listen for once!"
