In a bid to highlight the
plight for South Ascot Post Office, Adam Afriyie MP met on
Saturday with local residents and hardworking Conservative
Councillors from the Royal Borough of Windsor and
Maidenhead.
Despite previously being
assured of its safety, the Post Office Ltd announced on
Tuesday 8th April that South Ascot Post Office
would close subject to a public consultation starting on
Wednesday 28th May.
Speaking at the Post
Office, Adam Afriyie said:
“I am completely against
the proposed closure of this branch, and another two
branches threatened in Windsor, and I have been actively
campaigning to stop this from happening.”
Adam added:
“I urge every reader to
respond to the Post Office consultation in order to save the
South Ascot branch and retain the services that it provides
to the local community.”
The Government is forcing
Post Office Ltd to close 2,500 branches around the country,
and has left them with the difficult task of deciding which
particular ones to close.
Despite the fact that
ninety Labour MPs – including seven Cabinet Ministers – have
campaigned for Post Offices in their constituencies to
remain open, it’s alarming to note that only 20 Labour MPs
voted against the Government’s forced closures when the
Conservative Party called a vote in Parliament.
